Yes, I remember the Vanport Floods. After the waters had subsided, my father took us for a drive through the area. I recall seeing houses sitting askew on their foundations. I was 7 at the time and living in Maplewood.

Actually Bob, it was May 31, 1948. The first dike that broke took out Vanport and somewhat East. The second dike broke 2 weeks later taking out the airport, my parents and grandparents houses, and went way out past Blue Lake.
I got out of helping with the cleanup as I was pregnant with my first baby and couldn't take the required tetanus shot.

I was in Portland (near Mt Tabor) When the VanPort Flood took out the Airport and surrounding lowlands and housing, and racetrack! What a mess! I managed to drive by it a couple of times. Anyone else old enough to remember it? I believe it was 1947. it was caused by a very heavt sbow pack in the mountains and a very prolonged warm rain. Blew out he Dike and flodded the whole area.
