Jesse Tetherow was the great grandson of Solomom Tetherow, captain
of a wagon train that traveled in 1845 from Missouri. Solomon's son,
Andrew Jackson Tetherow, and his wife Sophronia, bought section 36,
school lasnd on the Deschutes River, and installed and ran a
cable-operated ferry across the rover. He worked at this from 1878
until the county built a bridge in 1885. His bridge saw many early
day crossings of emigrant wagon trains enroute to the western side of
Oregon. It has been closed for many years, and now there is just a
foot crossing to fenced land on the other side". Redmond Rose of the
Desert June 1975 B Elizabeth Ward
The Redmond Parks department has recently bought the Old Tetherow
House on the river. I have some of the articles that have been
published in recent months. The building is not the original
structure but the place is surely a historical point in Central
Oregon history. I have driven across the bridge in the summer months,
and I know is not totally for foot traffic.
Mrs. Ward goes on..." Mr. Tetherow was reared by his grandparents and
years after recounted that he killed his first deer in the area
where, years later, Redmond was located. In 1935 he married Mabel
Berning, member of a pioneer family in Antelope, and they lived 15
years on the A L Tetherow ranch before moving to Redmond". And the
story goes on.
