I was almost 9 when we has the big snow in 1969. It was Feb 3rd of 1969 and
I only remember it because my best friend at the time was spending the night
at my place and it was her birthday! We woke the next morning to about 3+
feet of snow. We were living in Veneta at the time, west of Eugene and it
was almost a week before we were "dug out". I remember the neighbor's
hooking up a horse to a sled they had and took a bunch of us into "town"
(Veneta) to Harold's Market after it opened up in a few days so we could get
supplies. I have photos at home of cars buried and the street in front of
our house, Ellmaker, having just 1 lane going down it.
I know there was a big flood in Reedsport in the 40's, I think but can't say
for sure. I have some photos of that I got from my grandma, who lived there
at the time. I can still remember seeing her old house with the water line
about a foot up on the wall.
Then there was the Columbus Day storm; must have been '62 or '63? Couldn't
have been later than '63 because we moved into the "new house" in the summer
of '64 and we were still in the old house when the Columbus Day storm hit.
We had a huge oak tree break a branch off and scrape out front living room
window. If it had been 6" longer, it would have gone thru the plate glass
window. I was very young, 2-3 years old, but I remember parts of it, like
bringing our milk cow and her calf onto the back porch because we weren't
sure if the barn was going to make it.
Sure hope we don't get any repeats of those storms in the near future!
Sitting here in Burns with just 8"-10" of snow is plenty for me!
