Hi Peggy:
I don't recall hearing the name Vanatta before so I can't help you with that. I
may be that they stopped at the Foster place (east of Portland), before going
on to Portland and Oregon City.
FWIW: When I lived in Portland I knew a ham operator (W7ZF) Jerry Foster.
He was related to "the" Foster's; after which Foster Road in SE Portland is named.
When my gr grandfather Jacob Houk, et al, crossed the OT in 1868, they stopped
near Lebanon, OR. A short time later all but he, his wife and children, went back
to the Walla Walla Valley area.
Many of my ancestors went first to Linn County, and then on to other areas of
OR and WA. Brownsville, OR, was a magnet for many of them. My gr gr grand-
father Capt. James Blakely laid out that town and named it after his uncle, Hugh
Leeper Brown. If you go to Brownsville today you'll see a few buildings from
that era; the Moyer House for one.
Woodburn and Gervis were not unknown to my ancesters; some are planted there.
Rachel and I always stay at the Fairway Motel in Woodburn when we're in that area.
Room 54 if we can get it. :-) (nice bed!)
Good hunting,
Cecil
