Hello all,
I don't have access to my normal mail right now, so can't forward the
messages I sent quite a bit earlier asking about the parentage of Everett
A. MOSES and Mae MOSES.
I knew at the time that both were grandchildren of Rev. Peter Allen MOSES
(who died in Corvallis in 1919), but wasn't quite sure which of Peter's
sons had children by these names.
Now I know!
I found Everett A. MOSES in the 1930 census living in Florida, along with
his wife Aleece (FISCHER), and their son Robert W. MOSES. The census said
that both Everett and Aleece were born in Oregon (knew that already), and
that Everett's father was born in Texas.
Having found Peter's son Amasa MOSES in the 1920 and 1930 census records,
I knew that his census entries indicated that he was born in Texas (even
though the 1870 census for Arkansas shows him as being born in Arkansas).
So my hunch was that Amasa was the father of Everett. This hunch turned
out to be correct, but it took me quite some time to prove it.
First I found Everett A. MOSES living in Corvallis, Benton County, Oregon
in the 1910 census, but not with Amasa. At the time he was 17 years old
and living in the home of a person to whom his relationship was listed as
"grandson". This person's name appears to be John R. ROWLAND; John was
apparently the owner of a boarding home because lots of people other than
his grandson Everett were living with him. John R. ROWLAND is shown with
a daughter Mary, then a bunch of boarders, followed by Everett (listed on
that page as Everette). The maiden name of Everett's mother is PHIPPS
according to the California death records (Everett died in California), so
I'm wondering just how John R. ROWLAND might be connected to ? PHIPPS
(later shown to be Emma L. PHIPPS), who is the mother of Everett.
I had tried to find Amasa MOSES in the 1910 census but failed to do so at
first. I was originally looking at the 1910 census records for Oregon &
California (where he was living by the 1920 census), but never found him.
At one point I just did a search for his name, not specifying which state
I wanted to look at, and out he popped -- living in Nebraska at the time.
Once I realized that Amasa lived other places in addition to Benton
County, Oregon and later California, I was then able to find him in the
1900 census -- living in the Territory of New Mexico -- TADA! with wife
Emma L., son Everett A. and daughter Goldimay. Amasa's wife Emma, and
both of their children were listed as having been born in Oregon.
So this census record finally gives me the proof I need that Everett A.
MOSES and his sister Mae were the children of Peter's son Amasa MOSES.
With the 1900 census showing Everett's mother's name as Emma L., and the
California death index showing her maiden name as PHIPPS -- I also now
know the name of his mother, but NOT her relationship to John R. ROWLAND.
While I was doing some web searching for Everett MOSES, I learned that he
made quite an impression during his lifetime. First, he appears to have
been an outstanding athlete in Corvallis:

http://www2.corvallis.k12.or.us/chs/athletics/track/1913.htm
Then he became a musician with Sousa's band:

And ultimately, a band director in Florida:

Can anybody clarify how John R. ROWLAND fits with Everett A. MOSES?
