Powell Grove Pioneer Cemetery
This cemetery was established in 1848 and is located at Northeast 122nd and Sandy Boulevard, Portland, Oregon. Multnomah County started managing this cemetery in 1948 and Suzie Busiz was kind enough to give me a complete copy of my family file, which consisted of 75 pages.
And now for the problem that I need help with I put out to this wonderful group of researchers.
The Metro Pioneer Cemetery has no records for this cemetery prior to 1948. The Oregon Historical Society has a book "Oregon Guide to Genealogical Sources" authored by "Lenzen" which list on page 242 this cemetery and states it is on microfiche reel number 16 but does not state where this reel can be found and the Oregon Historical Society does not have this particular reel.
The GFO has a book, which lists this cemetery, but it is just made up of information taken from the headstone located at the cemetery. And to make matters worse the headstone in questions says:
MELVIN
FATHER MOTHER
1856-1936 1861-1930
Now the Father in question is Edgar Nicols Melvin born 27 Oct 1858 and died 28 Nov 1936 (Info from Death Certificate). The Mother is (I HOPE) Alice Delcina (KITTELL) Melvin born 6 Sep 1861 and died 1930.
I know they got divorce on 6 Jul 1906. And family records I have say Alice died in Oakland, California in 1930
Plus I found a second marriage license for Edgar dated 14 Nov 1911 to a Maria J Mills born 27 May 1857 of Eugene, Oregon at time of marriage. I have not found a death certificate or a divorce certificate for this marriage.
So far I have gone thru the January thru June 1930 issues of the Oakland Tribune looking at death notices with no luck. And I am waiting for the second half of that year newspaper to continue my search.
Bottom line is this. Assuming the "Mother" in question is Alice when and where did she really died? And a family mystery is if Alice is buried here why? He divorced her 24 years early because she would not live on a homestead. She wanted to live in a big city, i.e. Portland.
Any help, clues or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
