Barbara;
I am a bit curious about this, is this an answer to a question I missed? My
father had a story about I believe it was my grandfather or great Uncle
working on this structure and a co-worker held his hammer in the middle of
the handle so grampa cut it off to that length for him. Of course with my
memory I may be confusing stories but I know kin of mine worked on it.
Oh by the way the structure described here burned down, I believe in the
'70's. It was a teen-age prank as I recall, whatever they did to the
kid/other that did it wasn't just punishment, I think they should have made
him rebuild it by hand.
I did get to visit it once or twice before then, it was an awesome building.
I wish NOW that I could go back and video tape all those kinds of trips I
made with my father; he was born to a horse and buggy culture, lived to
commuter space travel and all of that "advancement" in his life time. I
don't think any group of people lived through a more radical period social
change than he and his peers since the folks that were around when the wheel
was invented.

Oregon End of the Trail Binfords and Mort Portland 1940
Pg 223 - Portland
The Forestry Building (open 9-5 daily), NW. 28th Ave., between NW. Vaughn
and NW. Upshur Sts., made entirely of fir, is a weather-beaten structure 206
feet long, 102 feet wide, and 72 feet high. In the vast interior,
accentuating the great size, are fifty-two log pillars six feet in diameter,
that support the roof and a gallery of small logs. On the floor are
sections of great logs nine or ten feet in diameter, and polished slabs of
various kinds of commercial lumber. Doubtless the largest log cabin in the
world, 1,000,000 feet, board measure, of logs went into its construction.
It was a feature of the Lewis and Clark exposition of 1905. It is occupied
only by a caretaker.
