Les, As you said this is a hard nut to crack. We have a William B. Royal,
M.D. "who has been sick so long" died in 1892. The mention of his death is
in the 5 March 1892 Lake County Examiner. No mention of any family past or
present. He was born in 1827...noted from his headstone. He had an Masonic
burial.

Buried next to him is Mrs. Royal. No headstone.

But, I sure do not want to assume that Mrs. Royal is Susan N. Royal. Why
would an heir-in-law take care of her property if her husband was still
alive? Maybe they were not living together? There is no probate records in
the County Clerks office.

The interesting part is that she purchased the property in her name. Not
normal in those times.

You are right, Bob, in the fact that there was lots of migration back
between the Willamette Valley and the Chewaucan/Summer Lake Valleys. Cattle
are/were hard to raise in a populated area, as were horses for the military.

I wish that somehow the complete listing of everything that is in the Rigdon
Journals that are in the Oregon Historical Library could be done. Our
youngest son, and a good friend copied some of the names that went through
Rigdons place. The journal is too fragile to photocopy.

Diane
