[or-roots] Writing personal history

I have often thought about writing a personal history, but it seemed like
such a daunting task it was hard to begin. I've found a method that works for
me.

I keep a computer file (or it could be a spiral notebook) where I write short
memories when they pop in my mind. Lately I've been into memories of when my
children were growing up, but sometimes it's memories about my parents or
grandparents, or my own childhood. My average article takes about 20 minutes to
write. I will end up with a collection of memories, which I can put in order
and maybe add some transitions. But even if I never get to that point, at
least I'll have all these neat little short articles.

If I think of a story or event and don't have the time to write, I just write
down the topic so that I'll remember it later when I do have time to write.

It's been really fun! My (grown-up) kids were all home last weekend, and in
our talking and laughing I remembered several stories that I wanted to put in
writing. They are now on my "idea" list.

Maybe this simple system will work for someone else out there who gets
overwhelmed looking at the big job of a personal history.
