Bob,

Looking at the 1880 census on FamilySearch, I found a 7 year old Alonzo 
Dye living with his father, L. H. Dye in Linn, Christian Co., Missouri. 
There are a number of siblings listed too. I would try to find him and 
his family on later census lists. That should help you trace his 
movement to the west.
