I see I did an oops when I put the note in last night. It was 1881. It is a
rather interesting story. He was apparently in the middle of a neighborhood
feud and was thought to be rustling cattle. However, he had a friend who was
in the midst of a divorce and was attempting to hide assets from the friends
wife. Thus, about 200 cattle showed up in John Hawk's pasture that were known
to not belong there. He was tried for rustling and acquited but in the
meantime, he had a pregnant wife and apparently he also had eyes for his neighbor's
wife-a man whose last name was Adams-I have no documentation as to the
seriousness of the eye making but it is thought that Adams thought the eye making to
be a serious matter. They went camping on the creek at Lostine and John Hawk
was shot in the head. The above info was supplied to me by Grace Bartlett.
The local historian and a real stickler for facts.
