That whole branch of my family seems to come up with stuff that would work
fine in a dime novel from time to time. There is much more to the story. He
was a nephew of AB Findley who is mentioned in "Hear Me My Chiefs" His father
came west in 1845 as a drover for the CM Grover party. William Hawk, the
father of John Hawk was one of the soldiers who escorted the wounded back to safety
when they went after the Cayuse who had been involved int he Whitman
Massacre. There are several ramifications of the story that are quite interesting.
It seems to have been commonly suspected that Adams was involved in killing
John Hawk because there was no hole in the tent when he was shot while lying down
in the tent they were camping in. However, no one was tried or convicted of
his murder. I have a copy of a letter written to Grace Bartlett in the 30's
by a man who was alive at the time of the murder and he suspected Adams of the
deed. Sadly, he was killed a month before my grandmother was born and she
died mysteriously when she was only 38. My power is about to go in a
thunderstorm so more later. And thanks for you comments Les,
Judy
