Cecil,

My family lived in that area in the 1940's, did you ever meet anyone with
the surnames of Mann or Coffin? I remember my uncle telling me stories
about my dad and his friends driving those gravel roads.

<Now, as you look across HWY 20 (to the north), you will see what is left of
the land I called home 1943-1948 and Foster Lake.
 >..............................<
The road is now nice, smooth, blacktop today. It was tar and gravel when we
lived there in the 40's>

I also have fond memories of Foster and Yellow Bottom. My family has been
camping and gold panning up there all of my life, except for the last 15
years as they have all gotten to old and I now live so far away. I love to
hear youtalk about the place as it brings back memories. Here's one that's
not historic, but possibly amussing to anyone familiar with the dam.
The family had gathered to form a small camping community up above the dam.
My sister and her new husband came home from New York City and set up their
tiny tent near the a creek that fed the lake. Dad warned them to place the
tent up near everyone else, but no one paid attention to where they
eventually pitched it. The next morning my sister walked into the camp
carrying a wet sleeping bag. They had slowly slid out of their tent just a
few feet, but that was all it took to wake up with their feet in the creek.
It had risen in the night due to the dam holding back water. They had set up
their tent on a slope too close to the waters edge. Another thing I
remember is driving on gravel roads near Sweet Home and picking up pieces of
Holy Agate, a beautiful purple agate that only comes from there.

Thanks for sharing,
Nanci
