What memories!! I remember my mother using the oval shaped copper
bottomed boiler on the wood range to can a wide variety of veggies,
fruit and meats.--also used that boiler on washday to boil the
laundry-- home made soap--- scrubbed on a washboard.-- She graduated to
a pressure cooker, then to reusable tin cans for vegs and meats. I took
great pride in my own shelves of home canning. Having moved from
central Oregon to Willamette Valley--the land of plenty--, as a young
mother I thought it was my duty to preserve EVERYTHING that grew from
our trees, vines and garden.
I still used a 50+ yr old qt. Presto pressure cooker on occasion in our
travel trailer.
