DAn;
Yes, Joe Meek was an interesting person. Some shunned him because he was a
"Squaw-man" and smelled like one most of the time.
I accidentally found out he is in my family linage in the early 1960's. It was
centennial or bi-centennial year and I was working with the Boy Scouts. We
were making a float for the local Phil Sheridan Days parade. I sent to the
State library for some information. They sent me two books (wished I'd had the
insight to document the titles and authors).
One book covered Joe Meek's life. There I discovered that he was a cousin of
President Polk. Mother had said we were "cousins" of that president.
I excitedly told Mother about my discovery and she denied any relation to Meek.
I backed up the information and she became embarrassed and said,"We just don't
talk about that".
Our family on mother's side were proud people - proud of what honored them and
forgetful about things better left buried!

That is why I have so much trouble tracing my family lines. On top of that, her
family were Smiths! Just try tracing that name!
Personally, I enjoy my heritage, whether it was spoken of or hid from everyone.
I've never got to a Meek Reunion as they are on Sunday but I gladly claim him as
my ancestor.
