As I write this "Stage Door Canteen", a 1943 movie, is playing on Turner Classic Movies (TCM, Cox ch 58 in San Diego). I'm sure I must have seen this film at the Roxy theatre in Sweet Home during WW II. The last time I was in Sweet Home (August, 2000), there was only a vacant lot where the Roxy was on Long Street.

When my parents went to town Doug and I were sent to the Roxy while they did their thing. I was 4 years old when "Stage Door Canteen" was released. I managed to stay awake for the 1st feature, the cartoon, the news reel, but I would always fall asleep during the second feature film. Doug would wake me up and we would go find our parents; usually at Lee's Pastime.

"Stage Door Canteen" featured many entertainers of the day; most of whom I remember from movies and radio programs of that era. It is an up beat story during a dark time in American history. Yes, we did buy War Stamps at the Roxy. Those booklets may be out in my garage today; I haven't had the heart to look through the things I brought down from Aurora in 1997 (the estates of my brother and mother).

God bless America!
