Folks I just discovered a new twist in difficulties finding folks in the
census; My cousin William Abel Foster married to Mary Louisa Severson is
listed under the surname Severson in the 1900 Census! I now know why I
didn't find him looking for William Foster. I got lucky, his father was
still Alive in 1900 and since I had his Census page up and it was the end of
the city of Merton I decided to page through for a while looking for cousin
William, luckily he was on the next page, living with his Mother-in-law
Annie Severson. I had been looking at her stuff and her hubby earlier so she
caught my eye when I was scanning the page, the next thing I notice was her
daughter Mary was still home and listed as a Severson. That puzzled me
since she and Willie got married in 1894 and I sat there and scratched my
head for a while trying to make sense out of it until I realized the next
person down was listed as Son-in-law and took a closer look at the name;
Willie. That was another new one for me, don't know if any body else in the
family ever heard of any of them being called Willie.
So if you can't find somebody by their surnmame when searching the Census,
try their Wife's surname.
