  Vicki,

A Henry Bonebrake, M.G. (Minister of the Gospel) married my gggrandparents, James Smith and Rebecca Jane Mathew, in Marion Co., IA 4 Jul 1854. James was born in Fountain Co., IN 14 Aug 1828 and moved to Marion Co., IA shortly before his marriage. It was while looking for James in Marion Co., IA that I ran across a great many Bonebrakes listed in tax records there, including in 1864 a record in Liberty Twp. for a John Bonebrake with the notation he was a non-resident. In 1853 and other years a John Bonebrake is listed in the Marion Co. tax lists but with no mention of non-residency, which would fit with information found in Douglas County Biographical Abstracts (http://www.rootsweb.com/~ordougla/biosb.htm) which says, "BONEBRAKE, John Starr; Fountain Co., IN 23 Jan 1830 > California > 1852 > Iowa 1856 > Douglas Co., OR bef 1862 [d. Roseburg, OR 1909]; m. Mary Elizabeth ARNOLD [b. Conco rd, OH 28 Mar 1837, d. Roseburg, OR 1937] 27 Nov 1856 in Newborn, IA.

The "Newborn" above where John Starr and his wife were married probably is actually Newbern in Marion Co., IA. Do you think this John Bonebrake might be your John Starr Bonebrake?

Funny . . . as far as I know there's no relationship (other than perhaps a friendship) of the Bonebrakes and the Smiths, but when reading these records back in 1992 the name of the man who performed the marriage struck me because there was a Bonebrake family in Hood River Co. where I grew up.

  Beth

I have John Starr Bonebrake born 1829 in Fountain, Indiana. He was the son of John H. Bonebrake and Katherine Starr. I am related on the side of his wife, Mary Elizabeth Arnold but I haven't been able to prove the connection yet. Here is the little bit of information I have on them:

My John Bonebrake was born in 1845 and the info I have says that his wife's name was Martha Ann. No surname. does this ring a bell? Yes they are the Douglas County Bonebrakes
