Database: Oregon Death Index, 1903-98
Name:Madantz, Harriett L
County:Portland
Death Date:23 Jul 1920
Certificate:2021

Perhaps getting her death certificate would lend information about who
provided information about her death.

I just got an answer from the State Archives guy who
researches adoptions. No record ever of any Hardwick's with name
changes at all. So, I guess if his real mother was this H. Lucy Madantz
then maybe he just was taken in by the Hardwick's and used their name.
That is kind of what happened with my uncle. His real name is Hardwick
on his birth record but he took the name of his step father Flynn and
has used it his entire life. Never was adopted.

P.S. I had another thought, perhaps Jesse was the
illegitimate son of Thomas Hardwick and this woman. A similar thing as
that also took place in my husband's family. He had a relative who was
married and got this young lady pregnant. When she had the baby she had
a nervous breakdown and named him as the father and the hospital called
him up and told him to come pick up his daughter. His wife was not
happy, but they kept and raised the little girl.

On a WWI Draft Registration card dated Sept. 12, 1918,
Jesse James Hardwick born July 4, 1882, is living in Portland, and his
mother's name is H. Lucy Madantz. His home address is 52nd and Platt.
Mother's address is the same. He is a farm laborer and his employers
name is R.B. Morehouse in Klondyke, Oregon.

Jesse James Hardwick buried in Dufur Cemetry was born in
1882.

Jesse Hardwick adopted nephew of the Sanders was born
July 1882.

Do you think the Hardwicks might have adopted him?

I had seen this census before but couldn't get
the previous page to open so didn't know the name of the people who
supposedly adopted him. If he really was a nephew the wife must have
been his mother's sister. He was back living with his parents and
brother Noah in the 1910 Census also in Whitman County, WA.

He is buried in the Dufur Cemetery.

On the 1900 census, Whitman County, Branham
Precinct, Washington, he is living with David M. Sanders 62, and Barbara
C. Sanders 53. The were both born in MO. Jesse Hardwick is listed as
an adopted nephew.

Do you remember the address of Jesse in the
Portland Directory?

				Dale,

What was Jesse's 1918 address in
Portland?

On the 1930 Census Oregon, Wasco County,
Thompson Precinct, there is a

Jesse J. Hardwick boarder 48 single
working on a wheat farm. He was born in Oregon. Unknown for his
parents.

The Oregon Death Index, 1903-98 has

Certificate 4898.
