Hi Les,
Thank you for your information. It doesn't sound like the right family.
But who knows! My Charles Howard was in and out of prison from 1908 to 1928
with 5 assorted names that I can find.
In 1908 he was sent to Oregon State Penitentiary for forgery in Umatilla
County as Edward Barrett (#5675). He was discharged August 10, 1910. April
7, 1911 he was convicted of burglary and sent to Washington State
Penitentiary as Charles Edward Howard (#6001). I have him discharged in
1914.
All his prison records say he was born in 1885 in Kentucky. On the 1930
census, assuming I have the right guy (Robert Williams), his age at first
marriage was 26 which would be somewhere in the 1910 - 1911 timeframe.
Luckily for me, in the archives in Olympia is a letter from California
asking if Robert Williams is the same as Charles and Edward. The reply is
also included listing all his prison stays in Washington. The same letter
is in the Oregon archives along with their reply, fingerprints and a
picture.
He married my husband's grandmother in 1915 and shortly thereafter stole his
father-in-law's horse, was caught and sent to Oregon State Penitentiary. By
1916 he was divorced and had a son whom he never contacted. This is what
got me into genealogy. I couldn't understand why he didn't go to the
custody hearing...He was in jail. I'll never understand abandoning one's
family!!!
I have just heard from the Washington archive people, that they found a
marriage for a Charles Howard in that small timeframe he was out of prison.
But that Charles is from Indiana. The 1920 census says my Charles was born
in Kentucky, his Mother and Father in Indiana. Maybe I'll find another
family? He must have been quite charming. He got out of prison in August
1910, was married December 1910, but back in prison April 1911. He got out
of prison in 1914, and was married to my husband's grandmother Rachel Brewer
in 1915, but back in prison, a father, and divorced by 1916. It truly makes
me wonder how many times he repeated this cycle and how many children he
had.
Any ideas from any of you would be welcome. He is a slippery (but very
interesting) fellow to find. As I said to Les, I'm considering a DNA test
to find the right family name.
Ronda
