I'm not convinced that J.C. GARR in Washington County in 1919 is the same
person as Clifford J. GARR in Marion County, Oregon State Penitentiary in
Salem in 1920.

Wouldn't Washington County be jail and Marion County be real deal prison -
and then there is the matter of J.C. vs. C.J. - Is not the prison system
real into exact names .....

But think of it this way. Perhaps Clifford was his real name but for reasons
we will never know he preferred whichever name went with the "J".

I have just been researching a Civil War Veteran who married Florence C.
Stewart.
Then in the next census, she was enumerated as C. Florence.
And she was buried as Celista F. Hamilton.

And this is not the only case of people in my lines using whichever name
made sense at the time.
