HA!  Even an unpublished phone number doesn't get you away from those sales people bugging you whenever they dang darn want to....

But you are right--you are considered fair game--even more so if your number is published.  On the other hand their are many things you can learn in one of those old directories...for example, my GG Grandmother was listed as a midwife--and no one doing genealogy in the family ever knew about it.
