Bob;
You pose a question I may not be able to do any good on Heritage quest with,
but google came up with one interesting possibility right off the bat; you
talk about the Pensylvania McLanes and operating on the tendency for
children to be named for their parents, Samuel McLane who was in the
Revolutionary army and can be found at this Web site;
http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/pa/philadelphia/military/1783phil02.txt
Might be an ancestor, of course he would probably be grandfather to your
guy. I was a little startled when I first searched the page thinking I had
hit a plethora of Samuel McLanes, but it is just the roster for successive
years. Interestingly he is listed as Captain, and second in command of his
company until 1787 when he is just a soldier? If this guy is your ancestor
tracking down the why of the bust in rank might be powerful interesting.
Google doesn't seem to have any other clues, so lets try Ancestry.com;
Have you seen this?

Unfortunately the most recent posting was in 2000 so chances are his email
has changed if you haven't been in contact;

It is possible that the problem is you are looking for the wrong name,
according to the index of the 1870 Census, he was calling himself McClure at
that time. I searched all of the likely McLanes in the 1860 Kentucky Census,
but there are 106 McClures and that is a bit much for me to tackle on my
dial up. I will try and remember to take a shot at it when and if DSL comes
through (been delayed by a phone co SNAFU) but for now I wonder if a name
change might have something to do with it?
1870 > OREGON > LINN > SCIO PCT Series: M593 Roll: 1286 Page: 623
McClure Samuel 38 Farmer Kentucky
Josephine 22 Keeping house Missouri
Frances 4 Oregon
George W. 1 Oregon
There are a couple of Berry Households just down the page, but may or may
not be kin.
Frances is working as a servant on W Park St. in Portland in 1900, but I was
unable to locate the rest of them, specifically no sign of Samuel that I
could see. Do you know for sure when he passed away?
I can hunt the rest of them down in 1900 if you want, but I doubt if it
would help resolve his parentage. One thought I had was his first born son
might be named for the father.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but I have a suspicion the name spelling
in the 1870 Census 'might' be a clue.

I've tried all the resources I can find. Can you help me?
My Grandmother was Corabelle Mclane. Her father was Samuel Mark Mclane.
He was born in KY (abt 1832) but lived in Oregon for a period and I believe
he married Josephine Berry abt 1850 inOregon.
My Problem is in finding his Father. I believe he is of the Pennsylvania
Mclanes but can't find any good info. HELP???
