This may be redundant information for the old hands on this list, but the  
book "The Brazen Overlanders of 1845" by Donna Wojcik Montgomery  (Heritage 
Books, Inc. 1992) is not only an interesting overview of the migration  over the 
Trail, but it is very valuable for the extensive bibliography in the  back of 
the book.  Some of the reference material is, of course, specific  to the 
pioneers of 1845, but much of it is a road map for any serious  researcher.
