Hi Eugene,
This question of why did he marry her and why did he leave was what got me into genealogy a few years ago. My husband's grandfather Charles Howard married Rachel Brewer in 1915. Then she divorced him in 1916. I had the final papers which were dated a few months after their son John Brewer Howard was born. Family lore said he went back to Kentucky and was an alcoholic. Thanks to a RAOGK (Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness, www.raogk.org) volunteer in Lane County, I got the court papers which told me he stole her Dad's horse, took off, sold it as his own, was caught and convicted of forgery. At the time of the divorce he was not in Kentucky, but Oregon State Penitentiary. I still don't know why they got married, but I know why they got divorced.
Did your great uncle have a baby in that one year time period? Did you find him in the Navy, or did he go somewhere else? Maybe he had two families?
The questions are endless!
Have a great day,
Ronda Howard

There are two divorces in question in Lane County. The first one was between my Great Uncle and his first wife. Apparently he married her five days prior to her 16 birthday and left her a year later to join the US Navy. He was 17 years older than this wife at the time of their marriage. She filed and according to court documents that I have she had to publish the divorce in the local newspaper. The mystery is why did they marry and why did he leave her. This question I may never no the answer to.
The second divorce is different. It has to do with my Great Grandfather and his second wife. She also filed and I have the 20 plus pages from the court records. But again I did not see any response from him.
I was hoping to get some leads from this wonderful body of knowledge and that I did. Some of the questions raised I did not think at the time to ask. When I go back to Lane County later on this summer I will be better prepared.
I thank all those who have responded.
Eugene

Hi!
Was the divorce finalized? Do you have the final decree? It could be that the divorce was not contested and that is why there isn't an "Answer" from the defendent. Or it could be that the divorce was never finalized? The other thought is that the person did not know where the other person was. If that is the case, the divorce filing would have had to have been published as a "Legal" in the newspaper as a way of announcing to the defendent about the proceedings.
You could check with the Lane County Bar Association and see if they have knowledge of the attorney and whether the practice was assumed or bought by another attorney. No one at the court house could help you with this?
WIthout more info on what you have, that's all I can help you with.
Trish

Recently I was going through the Lane County Court House records looking for divorce records. I found some information but in both cases all I found was one side of the divorce story. The person requesting the divorce side.
Q-1) How do I find the other side of the divorce story?
Q-2) What happens to lawyer's records when they die?
