Bill,
OSU's Wilkinson Hall was indeed named for William Donald "Doc"
Wilkinson, long-time Geology Dept. faculty member and department chair
from 1960-68. It was named for him on April 20, 1974. Our records
include the dedication program for Wilkinson Hall. In addition to
listing the program events, the program includes this text:
"The earth science building is named to honor the memory of William
Donald Wilkinson whose vision and enthusiasm were in large part
responsible for the initiation of the building project. Reared in The
Dalles and educated at the University of Oregon, he spent his entire
professional life teaching in Oregon and working on the geology of
central Oregon.
"Don was perhaps best known scientifically for his work on the Clarno
Formation and the Cretaceous sedimentary sequence of central Oregon, but
every rock hound or serious tourist was acquainted with 'The Field
Guidebook to Geologic Trips Along Oregon Highways' edited and largely
written by Wilkinson.
"Although Don served as Chairman of the Department of Geology at Oregon
State University from 1960 to 1968 and worked tirelessly on the geology
of central Oregon, his true interest and greatest contribution was in
the field of education. Starting as a young Instructor of Geology at
the University of Oregon in 1929, he was still active at the time of his
death. Scores of former students attest to his skill and enthusiasm as
a classroom teacher, but reserve their greatest praise for his skill in
the field. As a practitioner and teacher of the art of field geology he
had few peers."
One of the University Archives' goals in the next few years will be to
create an interactive campus map that tells the story of OSU's buildings
and links to historic photographs.
