Hello Everyone,
I made it to Oregon and back, two weeks ago, and it has taken me awhile to get back into the swing of things.
My sister and I first drove to RiverView Abbey Mausoleum to visit our Father, our Grandmother and our Uncle - Riverview Abbey Mausoleum is a sight to see, and its absolutely beautiful. Then we drove on out to Rockaway Beach and stayed at SeaView Condos. When we were children, our grandparents had a small cabin by the beach in Rockaway, it was torn down about 30 yrs. ago. We then spent the next day and drove up the coast to the Lewis and Clark Museum and Ft. Clatsop (the Fort burned down 1 month ago) so all we got to see was the museum. We also got to see Cape Meier's along the way - WOW that is really nice. It rained 5 days out of the 7 we were there. Coming from a dry climate, it was a bit too much!
The next day, we drove to Wilsonville. I had looked up a cousin (by marriage) before we left Denver, and we met her for lunch and then she took us out to the old Wood homestead (my maiden name is Wood). It is over 100 yrs old and a cousin thru marriage is living there. That was a treat to see it and from there we visited "Inza R. Wood" Middle School. That school is a landmark and it is named after my g. Aunt Inza R. Wood who married Aubrey Wood, my g. uncle. She taught school and was principal there for over 35 years. The school told us to call the mayor, Charlotte Lehan, for more genealogy info, so we did, and Charlotte came right over (in the rain) and we all drove out to PleasantView Cemetery - (which is in the same area as the Wood homestead and the Inza R. Wood school.) At the cemetery we got to see the 5 gravestones of my ancestors, John Nelson, Hiram E (my grandfather)., Alice, Aubrey and Inza R. Charlotte, the mayor, also told us that every year the children from the middle school come out to the cemetery on memorial weekend, to take care of the 5 Wood graves. That was really a comforting touch to our trip! Good thing that Aunt Inza married into the Wood family or the Wood graves would be sinking into the Oregon soil! (The ground is very soft from all the rain and gravestones tend to sink)-- The town of Wilsonville is growing and growing, it was not the small farming community that I expected. Love to live there if they would turn off that rain shower.
After the trip to Wilsonville, we never made it back to the Portland area again because that week we had several bad storms that blew in and the TV news reported lots of flooding on the hwys near and around Portland. So, we tufted it out and stayed near the Coast: ate fresh steamed crab, visited the Tillamook Cheese Factory (twice for ice cream) and found cute little towns up and town the coast. We met interesting and very friendly people everywhere we went. One night we even went to see a movie in Tillamook, "The Fog", it is filmed on the northern coast of Oregon. Needless to say, that night, I left the nightlight on.
I didn't get much genealogy accomplished but the trip was fun and memorable. The pictures are breath taking and my sister and I will never forget our experiences together.
Bye for now,
Sherry

If anybody has an interest in the stories sometimes connected to the people
found in old cemeteries...The Salem, Oregon Statesman Journal did a special
series on it and it can be found here:
http://www.statesmanjournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/99999999/NEWS/50114001&theme=HEADSTONES%20OF%20HISTORY&template=theme
I had fun just browsing through the stories, and now am going to start
checking other localities to see if they have done stories like this, It was
really interesting!
Sondra
