Robyn didn't write that, I did. And the person who told me said "it became a law about 1850".

I have checked as many states as I could, finding that Missouri, for example of a "midwestern state"
apparently didn't. I found a few (Ohio comes to mind) that had townships, but they more closely resembled
the "New England" model, cutting across geographic twp lines, following natural meanders perhaps. For
example Beaver Twp in Pike County has 23.5 mi², not the 36 it would have if it covered a "township" on the
Twp/Range/Meridian model.

I don't want to get a snit going here, I will ask for a citation from the originator of the comment.

I did learn something, however, in that I didn't know townships in Nebraska, SD, ND, etc., were named.

I suspect Les is right about the Rocky Mountains being a "divider" but it may be farther east than that.

I just found another really good website: http://www.nationalatlas.gov/

You can make your own survey maps, check exactly what a piece of property is, (whoops, no "names" <G>)

Anyway, if I ever get a citation on this issue, I'll send it along.

Pat (in Tucson, also without Township names)
