My father also worked for the SP&S. Lovingly referred to in our family as
"the Slow, Poor & Stingy". After the war he was a lineman on the railroad
and we lived in a converted caboose. It was quite nice. There was another
car behind us where my mother cooked for the crew. Guess we were really one
of the "box car" kids before the books. We lived on the Wn side of the
Columbia in little places (then) like Walla Walla, Wishram, Plymouth. We'd
take the ferry across the river to buy groceries and some times I'd get a
ride to school on the "speeder car".
We lived about 10 feet of the main line,we had a "path", and no running
water. When it was time to move, an engine would pull us down to the next
job side track. Once we actually lived in a one room railroad house, again
about 10 feet from the tracks. The window box was the refrigerator and
when it froze outside the milk cream would push the paper cap about an inch
beyond the bottle. We lived on the railroad the year the Columbia froze.
We moved to San Diego the year dad got frost bite from being stuck out in a
storm for several hours. Lots of fond childhood memories.
