Camp Named for Seabee
Arnold Joe Faulkner was a 21-year-old Portland Seabee who felt he
had a duty to volunteer for a second tour of duty in Vietnam
He was killed in a construction accident near DaNang last year
leaving a wife, Betty and infant daughter, Emma Lou. His father, Willard
J. Faulkner, a step mother, two brothers and two sisters live at 3373 SE
17th Ave
Recently his father was sent a program describing the dedication of
a Seabee camp near DaNang named in honor of his son.
The elder Faulkner, who recently suffered a heart attack and is
convalescing at home said he was immensely touched and pleased by the
Navy's gesture
He showed a letter written by his son shortly before his shipment
overseas in which the youth wrote: "It's a little sad and lonely to go
but we both agree it is something that must be done."
"I feel terrible about his death," said his father. "But naming the
camp after him was wonderful. That was really something."
The Navy letter to the elder Faulkner explain the official reasons
for naming the cantonment Camp Faulkner. In laconic service prose, a
release from San Francisco explains it has been the practice in Vietnam
to name camps after servicemen killed in that theater.
A letter from Arnold's commanding officer described him as a petty
officer who was "well liked, did his job and did it well."
