I don't know of a connection. My Shoemaker's have been real tough to track.

Hi Glen,
I have So. Oregon Shoemaker's in the Gold Hill area on my wife's side of the family. Descendants of Joseph Shoemaker (b. 1832 IA d. 1882 Jackson Co., OR) and wife FNU Hall. Children Mabel, William J., Joseph S. and Edward all born in Jackson Co. Any connection??
Regards,

I see Shoemaker is one of your family names, that is also one of my wife's family names, and one of her relatives has website on myfamily.com title the Shoemaker/Aumiller/wailes/wales family.
Not sure I got the title right, and I am not sure if their were any in Southern Oregon do know some are in the Centraila Wa. and Bremerton Wa. area.

Pat,
I believe you are thinking of the Museum that has a research library in Douglas County. The genealogical society is in the courthouse basement and the public library is right next door. They are not that large but they are pretty good at Douglas County as well as the courthouse is right there. The people in Douglas County have always been so kind and considerate as well. I'd forgotten to mention the museum which has a nice photo collection and great resources as well. Having so much of my family in Douglas County has given me a fond spot for doing research down there <Grin>.

(Agee, Atterbury, Belieu, Blakely, Gage, Gilliam, Gilmore, Kent, Livingston, Matthews, Shaff, Shoemaker, Thornton, & Trask are some of my Douglas County surnames)

I also enjoy the Knight library. Great resource for the newspapers, and their special collections has the Lockley papers and other interesting things, including many "diaries" and such from the Oregon Trail, that I have not seen published.
Also, I found a Master's Thesis on Mt. Angel -- quite a find there too.
Now, I've been to the Douglas County Genealogical Society -- I think, it's just off the highway on the east side? But, not to the Library. I'm looking for Parks, Reids, Richardsons. Do you have any idea if the library would have information that would include them? Except for Reids, they were all gone to eastern Oregon/Washington by about 1870.

I like to visit the Knight Library at the University of Oregon in Eugene - they have a large collection of newspaper on microfilm so I enjoy finding obituaries. They also have a large collection of city directories for the state of Oregon.
