Don't remember the subject line of these posts about this, but wanted to 
say that the "ff" is sometimes synonomous with "ss", as in Capt Thomas 
Avery Akins (preferably not Aikins), an early Coloradian - '58 - 
married  Margaret Sterritt Ross / Roff / Rofs in 1833 in Ohio.  Blame 
phonetic spelling  combined with dialectic pronunciation ...
