I would have to concur with that suggestion Bill; I think one of the reasons
they aren't seem much any more is they were fairly dangerous. We always
called them straddle buggies.
I find a couple of mentions of them at this site;
http://www.speypages.com/speyclave/archive/index.php/t-27932.html
straddle truck
–noun a self-propelled vehicle, having a chassis far above the ground, for
carrying loads of lumber or the like beneath the chassis and between the
wheels.
Also called straddle carrier.

You will be able to see a pic of one, actually probably quite similar to
what got Mr Grimm if Bill and I are correct in our interpretation at that
URL, it isn't a great picture, but if you really want a good look at it I
guess you could bid on it, starting bid $150!! I'd think it was worth more
than that for scrap?
Okay, I stand corrected, it appears that they are still in use in the lumber
industry, though the capicities listed at this site indicate they also
manufacture them for such jobs as containers and other big lifting jobs;

JFYI,
This wording, and the date, would incline me to think this was not a
highway traffic accident with a log truck, but an accident, probably in
the mill, with a special vehicle, now obsolete, designed to carry stacks
of lumber, ala http://www.libbymt.com/news/2006/06/Hysterlumbercarrier.htm
Glad to hear you are making progress!
