Below is info I received about an event September 27.

The GFO Fall seminar is scheduled for Saturday, September 27, 2008, at the
Milwaukie Elks Lodge, 13121 SE McLoughlin Blvd., Milwaukie. Registration
begins at 8:00 a.m., and the first class starts at 9:15 a.m. The last
lecture ends about 3:30 p.m.

The speaker is Ann Carter Fleming, CG, CGL. I have heard Ann speak, and each
time I learn something. She really knows her stuff!

Ann will talk about common and uncommon record sources. She will explain how
to look at documents in order to extract information that most people skip
over. We will learn how to identify and separate the facts and clues in each
document, deciding where next to look. IMO that is the most important thing
that she will bring to the day because most of us have piles and files of
"stuff," and that "stuff" probably has the answer to our research questions.
We just need to know how to pull it out.

The lectures are:

1. "What is the Serial Set"
The U.S Serial Set is all of the documents generated by the U.S. Congress
and House of Representatives. Every-day citizens are named in the Serial
Set, and this is often the only source that leads you to where your ancestor
disappeared.

2. "When Your Ancestor Speaks, Are You Listening?"
Learn how to recognize clues in the documents and get over those brick
walls.

3. "Research by Time Period"
By dividing your research into four time periods, you will learn about the
most important and genealogically rich records in each area.

4. "Squeezing the Records Until They Talk"
Learn how to consider why documents were made, who the informant was, and
what information was pertinent to the record.

Registration forms are available online at the GFO website: www.gfo.org
Or phone GFO: 503-963-1932.
Registration for GFO members is $38 if received by Sept. 18th, $45.00 if
received after Sept. 18th. (No lunch can be ordered with late registration).
Registration for non-members is $43 before Sept. 18th, $50 after Sept.
18th.
The buffet lunch is $12 if requested by Sept. 18th.

Other seminar features: Major book vendor, other genealogical societies,
GFO genealogical treasures, and the GFO surplus book sale.

Put this event on your fall calendar - Saturday, September 27, 2008 at the
Milwaukie Elks Lodge. Send your registration in today.
