Linda;

I did read the item by MacArthur, but am not familiar with the Horner book.
I was surprised by how many books I have that I didn't remember acquiring.
Someon was asking me about Skookum by Shannon Applegate a while back and it
seemed like I said I'd seen it but didn't have it which turns out to be
wrong, it apparently got on the market at an estate sale as it is a signed
copy with a persoanl kind of endorsement and some notes. And I was looking
at some of the Arcadia publishing books on Coos Co the other day and
discover I have one of those along with the Crescent city book and one on
Oregon covered bridges. I think the last one was a gift from my
sister-in-law, but don't know about the Coos book.

I didn't think to look for the name Ligthle when looking at Flora in
MacArthur.

I've about exhausted my resources and your and Ingrid's help on the Karns,
guess I'll have to go see if I can learn anything for Ingrid on HQ.

Les
actually I probably better go do some housework while my wife is still
speaking to me in a level tone of voice.

Les,
Do you have "Oregon Geographic Names"? Here is what it has to say about
Flora.

Oregon Geographic Names, Seventh Edition, 2003, McArthur, Lewis L.
"FLORA, Wallowa. Flora was a post office in the extreme north part of
Wallowa County. It was named for the daughter of the first postmaster in
that district, A.D. Buzzard. This information was given the compiler by N.J.
Hansen, postmaster at Flora in 1925. The office was opened October 6, 1890,
and closed December 27, 1966. The little of Flora that remains is described
by Phil Adamsak in the Oregon Journal, July 31, 1981, p. 19."

And, here's another excerpt from that book:
LIGHTLE FLAT, Wallowa. George, Jay, and Charlie Lightle all homesteaded on
this flat due east of Troy in 1880.. See Horner, p. 914

STERLING GULCH, Wallowa. Sterling Gulch, four miles northeast of Greenwood
Butte, was named for A.W. Sterling. Horner, p. 1247, says he homesteaded
here in the 1880s.
