[or-roots] distance from Tiller

Carla;

I find it interesting that to me Tiller and Glendale are practically next to
each other, since both are more than 90 minutes away and you feel that they
are quite a ways apart when you are half a continent away from them!

I thought I had followed the railroad out of Riddle to Canyonville and was a
little puzzled by the description, but I must have been confused. I don't
remember ever taking the road to Glenndale and the boss says we never drove
that route. I just flew it in Google and I think she is right.

We did visit Glenndale a couple of times, but I think only near the freeway.

Actually this family graveyard is quite a distance from Tiller...it's on the
"back road" to Glendale that follows the railroad and Cow Creek out of
Riddle...and much closer to Glendale than Riddle. It is interesting to mark
the migration of some of the early pioneers who first settled in the
northern part of the state and then pulled up stakes to start all over again
in Southern Oregon. I've found a number of them who had established
homesteads in the Willamette valley in the 1840's/50's but ten or twenty
years later are found in what are now Douglas, Jackson, and Josephine
Counties. I'm guessing that they were able to sell their original
homesteads at a profit and moved to a place where more free land was
available...or maybe they were just the "grass is greener" adventure-types.
And of course there was the brief gold rush in Douglas County as well as the
speculation about the routes of the railroads to draw the entrepreneurs
among them.

Interesting story Sue. Ironic a Tuller story so close to Tiller. Don't
recall ever hearing about this when I was in that neck of the woods.

There was a nice article in today's Mail Tribune about these Oregon
pioneers. Thought I'd post this in case this family is of interest to
someone.
