In the 1878, I see Isaac Stephens on the north boundary of David Newsome.
Related? I do not see McCubbins, nor Hanson Stevens. On the 1862, as
overlaid with the original DLCs per Marion County, the Isaac Stephens plat
was originally owned by your Hanson and Lavina (Wickard) Stevens. It looks
as though John Newson had part of the property by 1862. D Newson again just
below.
What I find on James and Barbara Ellen McCubbins is:
No. 1851 McCubbins (X), James, Marion Co; b 1812/3, Va; Arr. Ore. 9 Oct
1852; SC 1 Feb 1853;; m Barbara Ellen 31 Jan 1853, Marion Co, Ore. T. Aff:
Hiram Taylor (MA), Wiley Kenyon, Samuel McCubbin, Wells Lake.
The DLC 1851 is listed as:

On a checkerboard it would look like this, with the "o"s being someone
else's property, the "x"s being theirs:
oooo
oooo
ooxo
xxxx
Looking at the 1878 Atlas, this property was by then owned by J K P Farrens.
The 1861 cadastral map:
http://www.blm.gov/or/landrecords/or/t080s020w_002.jpg
doesn't show a name on this plat. It does, however, show Abram Olinger on
part of Section 9.
However, this is two townships - or about 12 miles -- south of the Newsom
clan. They are on the upper end of Howell Prairie, in 06S01W, while this is
in 08S02W.
One of the neighbors is Philip Glover - my cousin's ggf - and the closest
cemetery to this is the Stipp Cemetery, where they are buried. I don't see
any McCubbins on the FindAGrave list, but there are several McKibbens - a
suspicious occurrence. This is straight down Howell Prairie Road from the
Newsomes.
The cemetery in on the NW corner of Macleay Rd SE and 82nd Ave SE. It looks
like it is perhaps 2 miles from the Glover and McCubbins properties.
I suppose you have already checked these, but just in case, I wanted you to
know what I found.

Hi Pat -
I looked over what you sent & wow, my gggGrandfather Hanson Stevens lived
right next door to David Newsome in which I didn't realize he was that
close. My gggGrandfather James McCubbins lived a few house away from Newsome
& Stevens. That's how my ggGrandparents Samuel McCubbins & Sarah E Stevens
met & married, (neighbors). They both came in Oct. 1852. Thank you for
sending the location. * I was just doing some research today looking for
cemeteries in that area, I know James's grave is probably lost, but need to
keep searching. I have searched everywhere for many years with no luck.

If it is of any help, Section 20 had the DLC's of (west side of the Pudding
river) David Newsome, John Newsome, (east side of the east fork of the
Pudding River) a bit of J J Tucker, John Brooks, some of Isaac Wright.
On present day maps, this is the area south of Nusom Road, between
basically, Howell Prairie Road on the west to about Trovard Road on the
east. There is a copse of trees, with a possible cemetery, with what looks
like an irrigation ditch, just west of Scism Road, south of Nusom, and east
of Howell Prairie.
It's at what I think is the location of David Newsome's original house.
Which would make sense. Just south of there is where John Newsome was, and
again, a couple of possibilities for a cemetery.
You can look on Google Maps, putting in < howell prairie road and Nusom Rd
NE, marion county, Oregon > and checking the sat. map.
It's a shame, I drove by that place twice in June, never saw a cemetery -
but then, I was watching the road <G>

According to "Salem Online History," the Capital Journal joined with the
Oregon Statesman to become the Statesman Journal Newspaper.
I would suggest both of these newspapers are in the Knight Library at U of
Oregon, and since you have a date, shouldn't be too hard for someone to
find.
It is not in GenealogyBank.com.

Does anyone know where I could read about the Newson Campground article in
this Capital Journal below & find out who is buried there? Also does anyone
have a name, or list of names for who is buried at the Olinger DLC Cem. too?
I am still searching for my gggGrandfather James McCubbins's grave died
Sept. 6 1877, Marion Co., OR..
Thanks, Nancy
