The Oregon Historical Quarterly for winter 2008 vol. 109, Number 4 has an
article on p. 598 called Economic Phoenix about A.B. Hammond who developed the
railroad to Astoria and ultimately Seaside and points further south. His
train first brought people flocking to the beach in summer, then he began
making more runs on Fridays and returns on Sundays and Monday mornings to Portland
hence the term "Daddy Trains" For people interested in Oregon/Washington
railroads and the "scroundrels" who developed them it is good reading.
