When the TV and radio stations get new broadcasters they really butcher the
Indian names in Oregon.

Les,
Now I'm laughing out loud! I massacre anything French but do know NOT to
pronounce the terminal 's'. Maine is heavy in the balance with French
ancestry and they butcher French place names with righteous abandon. This
state is also home to some of the longest Indian place names I've ever seen
in print. I lived in Germany for five years (kind of an immersion
experiment) and when I came back I pronounced anything I didn't recognize
using the phonetics of the German alphabet, English syllable structuring and
a Colorado accent. The result was hilarious and I can hardly wait to move
back West after being on the East Coast for a such a long time. Need a good
laugh?
Yes, I read 'bated' and my brain went 'baited? - nooo'
