What I have read lately is that the only time there is a problem with first cousins marrying is if there is a recessive gene in the family. Then it can cause problems like hemophilia, etc.
In my family there were still first cousins marrying as recent as the 1920’s. My grandmother’s brother married his first cousin and they were a very happy and devoted couple. They had four children who all turned out fine.
I wonder where Permelia came from. In my family Permelia Moore was the daughter of Alfred Moore and she married Hiram Leroy Moore the son of Squire Moore. Squire and Alfred were brothers. I guess that was not unusual in those days. From what I've been reading about DNA, it's not so much of a problem for cousins to marry as some cultures believe.
