Nancy

Thank you so much for this, and for the images.

In 1860, William Gallaher, wife Lydia (second wife) and children are living “next” to the Andrew and Mary Ann (Gallaher) Richardson in Linn County. Oliver, 29, b PA, is with the family.

The family, as listed in the 1850 census of Linn County includes:

Wm, 47, cooper, PA

Amy, 40, PA

Ellenor, 21, PA

Oliver, 19, PA

Joseph, 17, IL

Wm, 15, IL

Mary J, 12, IA

Thos F, 10, IA

Jas F 8, IA

Morgan, 6, IA

Jacob, 3, OT

Nameless 1/12, PA (huh?????)

Next door are the Kees (Amy’s brother)

Morgan, 37, VA

Marion, 38, female, OT (huh? That means Marion was born in Oregon in 1812 – wonder if anyone told Lewis and Clark about that <G>)

Henrietta Sager, 6, Ind

Henry Clymer, 23, PA

Elvin Kees, 38, Ill

Owen Kees 18, MO

Wm M Smith, 25, MO

Oh, I get it. If you put OT for “Nameless” and move the rest down, you have Morgan born in PA, Marion born in VA. However, Henrietta Sager was born in Missouri, so this still isn’t quite correct.

Henrietta was one of the children who survived the Whitman massacre (1844). She later married a Cooper and perhaps a Sterling, and is said to have died young (shot by someone in a mining camp in California).

Anyway, thank you again for the information. It is clear that Oliver, with many of the other Linn and Marion county settlers, found southeastern Washington to their liking!

Pat

Thank you for this. I think some of the Gallahers went to Washington as well, but no idea which ones. This may help. If you do get a picture, I’d appreciate it.

The Columbia (and later Asotin) records are important also, sometimes it’s easy to forget the change in county lines!

I was at an very old cemetery many years ago in Columbia Co., WA. where my pioneer families went - lived & died, Walla Walla/Dayton, WA. & area. I remember seeing a very old grave & the name Gallaher on a headstone. I forgot the first name. It was at Smith Hollow or Covello Cemetery?. The cemetery was not taken care of it's up a a small hill where the farmer was plowing all around the hill & even getting into the graves - closer & closer. We walked up to the graves from the road & it was out in the middle of no where. I can't find that name at Smith Hollow & Covello online, darn. Next time I'm up that way I will go there & take more pictures.

*Don't forget to check out Columbia County for your family graves that went that direction. You never know where they ended up in the end. Nancy
