Accually you are right on both counts from what I have read and heard, they did spead out to get out of each others dust and to find feed for the cattle, but tried to stay close enough to each other in case help was needed.

Subject: [or-roots] 1852 correction
I am currently working on my 1852 listings and in reviewing some of my email I see that I made a statement several weeks ago that there were so many in the emigration that in some places the wagons traveled 12 MILES wide. That should have said 12 WAGONS wide. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused. My brain and my fingers were obviously not working together.
