I notice one of your names is Hamlin.

My husband's ancestor is John Lewis Hamlin, born 28 Nov 1823 in New York or Connecticut. He married Mary Jane Bunn 3 July 1848 in Peoria, Illinois. I don't know when they actually came to Oregon. He was living in Douglas County, Oregon in 1866 when his daughter was married in Coos County. He filed for divorce in Douglas County in 1868.

He remarried in Douglas County in 1871 to Mary Jane (Conner) Allen. Later they moved to Polk County where he died in 1878. He is buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, also known as Red Prairie Cemetery. 2.5 miles west of Ballston. Site of former Methodist Episcopal Church, T. 6S, R. 4 W., Section 12. The Pleasant Hill Cemetery is located on the Nathan Conner Donation Land Claim and was established in 1852. Polk County Cemetery Book Volume 5 page 56.

I, too, enjoy this discussion about the Oregon Trail. One of my gr-gr-grandfathers came in 1848 (Griffin), and the other in 1852 (Hamlin). When I think about the hardships they faced as they traveled to and then settled in this new land, it makes me very proud.

I love this discussion about the Oregon Trail. So many of us have ancestors that traveled that trail and I worry that the history of the trail over time is becoming diminished.

My early Oregon ancestors - Cox, King, McCarty - all came to Oregon via the trail. They joined the many pioneers on their to Oregon in Missouri and were among some of the earliest to arrive here. I am very proud of my pioneer stock and am eager to finally begin to put that history together for our family.

    Gerry
