When I was about 5 years old my great grandmother would tell me stories
about coming over on the Oregon trail. I still remember some of them.
One that I liked a lot was when she told me that they were stopped by
some Indians who demanded food from them and wanted to take their cattle
as well. This was somewhere in Idaho I think. Anyway, the kids were
all in the back of a wagon and were eaten alive by mosquitoes. When the
Indians saw all the scabs all over their faces and arms they dropped
everything and ran away because they thought the kids had smallpox.

P.S. I found out later after I started doing genealogy that she was
reliving her parents experience and not hers because she was born in
Oregon.
