Perhaps some of you interested in the Cox families know Frances Cox
Griffin, who spent many years researching her Cox family and put
together a book of the results, which she has given to many in her
family. A copy is also in the Genealogical Forum of Oregon in
Portland and some other libraries in Oregon. Frances, 87, now lives
in Salem, not far from the Bethany Cemetery in which Gidion and other
family members are buried and which is on land donated by one of his
brothers, Peter.
According to Frances, Gideon is the son of Joseph Cox and Mary
Surgenor Pope. (Some think her name was Mary Surgenor, but Frances
has convinced me that she is correct.) Joseph was born in Grayson
Co., VA. He and Mary moved to Knox Co., KY and eventually wound up in
Bartholomew Co., IN. Here is just a small amount of info Frances has
on the family, including he children of Joseph and Mary:
Thomas Cox, born in Grayson Co., VA in 1791. Married Martha Cox.
Had a store in IL, and in 1846 along with a son and sons-in law loaded
up 13 wagons and headed for Oregon, where he established the first
store in Salem. He had a place out on Ankeny Hill area south of Salem
which is now the site of the Ankeny vineyard and winery.
Joseph Cox b 1792 in Grayson Co, VA. Married Polly Rains He was in IL
with Thomas at one point, Frances could find no record of him after
that.
William Cox b 1794 in Grayson Co. VA. Married Elsie St John in Knox
Co., KY. He died in Platte Co., MO. Some of his sons came to OR.
Jacob Cox b 1793 or 4 in Grayson Co., VA (possibly a twin of
William?). Married Jane Gatliff in Knox Co., KY.
John Cox (Frances' and my ancestor) b 1795 in Grayson Co., VA.
Married Sarah Stanfield in Jackson Co., IN. One of John and Sarah's
children, their son Samuel Stanfield Cox, married Harriet Cox; while
another, a daughter Diana Coffey Cox, married Harriet's brother
Solomon Cox. Samuel and Harriet were Frances' great grandparents.
Diana and Solomon were my gg-grandparents. John died in Johnson Co.,
MO. the two younger couples both came to Oregon. Samuel and Harriet
settled in the Bethany area near Silverton and are buried in the
Bethany Cemetery. Solomon and Diana settled on what is now called Cox
Butte, west of Junction City, OR, where my brother Larry lives on what
was part of their Donation Land Claim.
Jesse Cox b ca 1800 in Knox Co., KY, d in Dolphin Co., KS. Married
Polly Parker, daughter of John Parker and Lydia Ruddick. In between
they were in Benton Co., AR, where they had the Elkhorn Tavern.
Permilla Cox (also called Milley or Amelia) b 1799 in Knox Co., KY.
Wed three times, buried in Salem, OR.
Peter Jackson Cox b 1802 in KY. Married Jane Raines in Jackson Co.,
IN, and also two later marriages. Came with his brother Gidion in
1846 and also settled in the Silverton area. Donated land for the
Bethany Cemetery.
Gidion Smith Cox b 1806 in KY, buried in Bethany Cemetery. Married
Sarah Coffinberry
James Cox b 1810 in Knox Co. KY. Married Mary Juliatha Parker (sister
of Polly Parker). James & Juliatha came to Oregon in 1864, James
dying soon after arriving at the home near Silverton of their daughter
Mary and her husband Almond Shibley
Elias Cox b 1812 in KY. Married Mary ann Conner, and they stayed in
Bartholomew Co., IN.
Frances is a wealth of information on all of these families and their
descendants, in case any of this is new or interesting to any of you.
By the way, the siblings Harriet and Solomon Cox who married John's
kids, are the children of Solomon T. Cox and Mary Norris. Solomon T.
was son of Jesse Cox and Margery Cox. Jesse was the son of Solomon
Cox and Ruth Cox; Margery was the daughter of William Cox and Juliatha
Carr, and her brother Joseph is the one listed above who married Mary
Surgenor Pope!
Moreover, the Solomon who married Ruth Cox is a brother of the William
Cox who married Juliatha Carr. And the patriarch of this whole
tangled mess William Cox, a Quaker in DE who married Catherine Kinkey
of MD. I had the delightful experience of exploring, with the
grandson of the current owner, the wonderful old house in DE that
William and Catherine had built in the early 1700's. (I created my
own spreadsheet version of a family tree to try to illustrate all
these Cox interconnections.)
Greetings to all of you Cox relatives! I would love to learn how
this information in Frances' book matches up with your research. Marj
