It would be interesting to look at the census from 1850 to see if there
were any Scottish people living there.  I have recently been doing
research on Paisley Scotland and that is why I asked the question.  It
turns out to be the largest city in Scotland.  Even bigger than Glasgow.
The cloth Paisley was named after the city, not vise-versa.  It turns
out that they were a weaving community many hundreds of years ago.
Just a little trivia fyi.

That is one 1873 theory, but McArthur easily debunks it, so it makes one

wonder ...  another theory is named by another Scotsman, Steele, reason 
unknown -- of course, those earlier Paisly settlers called it something 
else 10,000 years before it was ever seen by the white guy's eyes, and 
probably many, many other native names in between ...
