None of the Cooper's in Independence cemetery are mine. I have mine all
accounted for and none were in this part of Oregon. GrGr grandparents,
Nathaniel Parda Cooper married Sophia Lucinda Cowles in 1835 in Pultneyville, NY
in 1835. They had my gr grandfather, Hulburt DeWitt Cooper in 1836 in PA
(somewhere). Second son was James FitzJames Cooper, b 1839 in Frankfort, KY.
They were in Iowa, Wash. Co. by 1843 until 1860 where they had several
daughters and one more son, Theodore Henry (Harry) Cooper. Moving on to CO by
1862 they settled there near Ft Collins until Nathaniel died in 1870. A
couple years later all of the boys, one sister and Sophia were in Jackson Co.,
Oregon. My grandfather, Guy Colin Scott Cooper was b in CO in 1872. James
was a school teacher, DeWitt a farmer. In 1884 Sophia made a land purchase
in Baker co. near Weatherby. She died there in 1893 and is buried on her 160
acres, high on a hill overlooking the Burnt River, Hwy I-84 and the
railroad, all of which run north to south, through the middle of what was her
land,. This was also a part of the pioneer trail from Idaho to Baker City.
Last Oct. a son took me to Baker City where we found a great many documents
and were also able to contact the people who now own a part of her land.
They took us up their private road, through their private gate and way up on
a hill, so high the big rigs looked like little toys. There we saw the CW
headstone for James. It reads: Com. Sgt. (Commisary Sergent), Co. M, 2nd
Colorado Calvary with his initials of J.F.J. Cooper. There was no date but he
died, never having married, Dec. 25 IBible record) or Dec 26 (Military
record), 1889. My grandfather was the only Cooper male from the three brothers.
He and his father ended up in Portland around 1906 and both are buried at
the Multnomah Park Cemetery at 82nd and Holgate in Portland. All of my
Cooper's are accounted for and none are related to other Oregon Cooper's. There
were several sisters who are also accounted for and have been in touch
with descendants of the youngest one, Edmonia Cooper Ryan whose daughter Grace
married a Himmel - lived in Silverton. Just wanted to set the record
straight - No Julia in our family.

There is a "J.S Cooper Block" in Independence, OR. The building/s are of
brick. The building fascinated me and I have made a drawing of it as it
looks
today. This is not, however, a part of my Cooper line.

thought I would mention my Coopers are the ones who made the big Cooper
brick company in Independence Oregon.
There is also a very large Cooper headstone in the cemetery out there,
not sure if it is one of my Coopers tho.
