I don't know where Pat got the census stuff, but for 1880 the LDS church has
an online sit;
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/searc
h_census.asp
also at top where you see a box to the right of "Census" you can select for
1881 British or Canadian, which sometimes comes in handy if you don't know
for sure where someone is among those, you don't select and can find your
people as long as you aren't looking for too common a name like i am right
now;
I am looking for a William Smith and wife Ann with children Robert and Emma,
the only thing that saves me from total frustration is they are born in
England and I know how old they are. And I only know they are somewhere in
the US. So far I have found about Six Wm ma Ann and of those I think four
had a son robert.
I was able to find Emma and here husband at the above site by listing
daughter Grace and her age +/- 2 years. I tried to search Grace with head
of House hold Albert, but came up empty because he is listed as AH, but
"usually" I can find someone at that site if they are in the census. I never
did figure out Milan Melvin until I paged through the Census and found him
only one correct vowel.
