Exit 61 northbound (north of Grants Pass) on I-5 is marked Jumpoff Joe. It is an area at the base of Sexton Mountain. We used to take that exit to visit my aunt until a couple of years ago when we moved her to an assisted living facility up in Canby. There is an RV park at the falls on Jumpoff Joe Creek that is accessed via the Hugo exit 66. Depending on which "history" you read, Jumpoff Joe Creek was named after Joe McLoughlin who fell over the edge of a bluff into the creek and received very severe injuries, or that he was being chased by a band of Indians and when he reached the bluff above the falls, his hunting partners yelled for him to "Jump off, Joe", which he did, incurring severe injuries that resulted in his death. The Indians of Jump-off-Joe creek, along with those of Grave creek & Wolf creek, are mentioned in the History of Southern Oregon, published in 1884. They are identified as "non-treaty" Indians who did not sign onto the 1853 treaty. A few miles further (maybe 10) on the road off exit 61 is Merlin. My Dad was working in a fruit packing plant in Merlin (many, many years ago) where he met my mother when she got a job at the plant, and the rest, as they say, "is history".

I just found Felix Hogue/Hoge was living Jump off Joe, Josephine Co., OR. later on.. I know where that is as I lived in Rogue River, Jackson Co.

Could you explain "Jump off Joe" in terms of what sort of division it was -- city, town, township, area, and roughly where it was, please? In terms of where in Josephine County?

"Jump Off Joe" has numerous meanings in the State of Oregon, from an old rock formation on the beach to a mountain to a creek in Josephine county where Dr Mcloughlin's son, Joeseph, fell and was fatally injured. I am not familiar with it as an address.

I ask, because I think I am looking for a Hiram Simpkins reported in the same area, possibly with a wife named Catherine. Another Hiram Simpkins can be found with wife named Mary, and family, in the 1860, 1870, & 1880 census in the Yamhill and Polk Counties area, and I do not believe this is the fellow I am looking for. The larger Simpkins family has a plethora of Horatios and Hirams in it.

  Thank you,

  Bill Strickland
