In this Hiram Simkins business, I find two in Oregon before 1900 -- one
in the Wheatland area of Yanhill & Polk Counties, with connections to
numerous of the well-known Champoeg area pioneers, and his uncle, Hiram
Simpkins, found in the 1880 census in "Jump off Joe" in Josephine
County, the census taker writing something that could be transcribed as
"Irian".

Anyway, of the former, less related one, I found the Matheny name
popping up again, which, since it has been a topic on this list, I
thought might be of interest to some:

among the children of George K. Gay by 1st wife, Louise/Louisa Johnson

"Mary Ann Gay not in either 1850 or 1860 census in house of George Gay
- married Hiram Simkins June 15, 1857, Yamhill County Marriages, book
"A-B" page 16. Witnesses William Matheny and William Miller. Data on
this family can be found in Portrait and Biographical Record of the
Willamette Valley) Chapman Pub. Co. page 694, and in Clark's History of
the '~ Willamette Valley, Vol iL~ pages 653 to 656. (The latter
reference contains much data on Geo K. Gay)."

from the DAR Monthly Bulletin March 1, 1965, in an article titled
'PIONEER FAMILIES OF YAMHILL COUNTY, OREGON -- Biographical sketches of
persons listed in the United States Government Census of 1850', Volume
One, compiled by Mrs. Mercedes J. Paul and Mrs. Ralph W. Van Valin for
Champoeg Chapter, DAR , Newberg, Oregon, 1953.
